Every time I deposit a check over $4k at WAMU, they send it back to me claiming that it is a “third party item.” Then I have to take it down to the branch to deposit it and the people at the branch all say, “The check looks good to me but we don’t control the ATMs – that is a different department.”
I had two of the checks investigated and I got a letter saying Our records indicate that the debit of $xxxx.xx was adjusted to your ATM deposit in error.
Great, they messed up. But they have no explanation how or why and then they keep doing it. Eight checks now.
I started writing NOT A THIRD PARTY ITEM on the back of the checks when I deposit them. That worked for 3 checks and now they have done it again.
I wrote them this heartfelt letter:
07/25/2006 ATM DEP ADJ – THIRD PARTY ITEM -$x,xxx.xx

Why do you keep doing this? I have to keep going down to the branch to deposit my checks after you return them. This is absurd. I have had two of the checks investigated and all I got was a letter saying that it was adjusted in error. So you messed up. Why don’t you do something about it? IT IS NOT A THIRD PARTY ITEM. You need to fix your system. IT IS NOT A THIRD PARTY ITEM. I have been depositing checks for 2 years and had no problems until recent months. IT IS NOT A THIRD PARTY ITEM. I even wrote it on the back of the check when I endorsed it so there would be no confusion. I guess your people can’t read. Read this: I’M LOOKING FOR A NEW BANK.
